3D Digitisation of the museum – Digital Museum

3D scanning and photogrammetry give us a new, unprecedented opportunity to measure, museum exhibits. 3D Digitalization of collections enables the publication of three-dimensional objects on the Internet, conducting research on exhibits and their full documentation. 3D digitization of the museum is also the first step in creating a virtual museum, that guarantees an unforgettable experience. Museum exhibits can be viewed by visitors from around the world, as well as shared for other exhibitions with no need to transport them. Find out how we create digital museums in SCAN 3D.

3D digitisation of the museum – technology description

Data acquisition

We obtain spatial data for 3D digitalization in accordance with the NIMOZ guidelines contained, among others, in the “Catalogue of Good Practices of Digitization of Museum Objects”. In this type of work, we mainly use photogrammetry, i.e., collecting data about the object using high-resolution digital photos. Thanks to them, we obtain the exact geometry, photorealistic texture and colours of the set. In the data acquisition process, we are also supported by Artec Eva and Spider optical scanners as well as LED structured light scanners.

Data processing

Both technologies used as part of the digitalization of the museum allow for determining the surface of the object in form of a spatial point cloud (XYZ) along with applying the actual texture of the exhibit. In the case of photogrammetry, the data from the photos are first converted into a mesh of triangles (3D MESH models). From them, we generate point clouds, 3D models and orthophoto maps. Combining 3D digitalization technologies, we obtain models with denser coverage and accurate geometry of the measured objects. Data acquired in process of three-dimensional digitalization of the museum are currently the most precise perpetual documentation of the exhibits. 3D models can be used for 3D printing, creating Virtual Museum, living history lessons and many other forms of presentation.

Digital museum - products that you can order from us

3D digitization is the process by which we create digital museums. We have specialized software, thanks to which we can export a number of products necessary to present a specific collection:

  • High-resolution 3D MESH models of exhibits.
  • Publication of 3D exhibits in SketchFab, nira.app and on websites using AR augmented reality and VR virtual reality.
  • Creation of a dedicated website for the digital museum.
  • Accurate analyses of exhibits, including damage reconstruction.
  • Making it available for visiting a digitized museum in the Metaverse.
  • 3D digitization of new original works of art as NFT tokens.
  • Animations and visualizations.
  • 360° photography.

Digitalisation in archaeology

Archaeological research requires the development of a huge amount of information in the field. 3D scanning and photogrammetric measurements support researchers in that process, displacing traditional methods of 2D documentation. Why?

  • 3D digitization provides an incomparably greater amount of measured spatial details.
  • Scanning time is only several minutes, and the speed of photogrammetric measurements used to collect data on archaeological excavations allows us to capture the site at a given, precisely defined moment.
  • Ability to use data for accurate spatial analysis.
  • Point clouds or 3D MESH models can be used for visualization and animation for promotional purposes.

Museum digitisation - how will you benefit?

We save measurement data in universal formats

The products developed by us can be loaded into all professional 3D editing programs and in popular free browsers.

100% safety guarantee of the measured exhibits

Our 3D scanners only use white light. Structured light technology scanners do not use lasers. The process of obtaining data from photogrammetric measurements is also safe for the exhibits. The 3D digitization carried out in this way preserves the works of art in an untouched form.

Speed and precise of measurements

3D scanning and photogrammetry provide spatial data of the highest quality for the digitalization of the museum. It is also an incomparably greater amount and detail of obtained data in comparison to traditional measurement methods.
